On June 1, the Blue Shield project—Strengthening European Maritime Security, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and carried out at CEI-Iscte, held an international workshop at the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) in Lisbon.

The event brought together experts, representatives from European and national institutions, academia and civil society to discuss the main challenges facing maritime security in the European Union and its contribution to European strategic autonomy, resilience, and sustainability.

Participants discussed topics such as geopolitical and financial risks, institutional and political synergies, and the importance of technological sovereignty and resilience in the maritime domain. The workshop concluded with a session dedicated to the concept of Blue Citizenship, encouraging reflection on ways to bring maritime security issues closer to citizens and raise awareness of the role of the oceans in Europe’s security, prosperity, and sustainability.
